Birch
In Broniewski's poetry, very often elements of nature are associated with specific moods of poems, they co -create or even reflect these moods. The main element of the images of the native landscape remain in the lyrics of this poet of the tree. In the literature, the theme of the tree, quite widely present in different eras, Most often it is taken from the Bible and supplemented by circulation, Widespread ideas transferred from art and religion (Holy Gaje, trees, np. oaks) different nations, peoples. As a rule, in this approach, remains a reflection of human fate (The trees live with man, wrote Żeromski), symbol (ambiguous) power, human size, nation, also the renewal of life, annual fruiting rhythm and dying. It is like a connector between heaven and earth. Individual species of trees have various symbolic meanings in European literature, np. royal, very hard olive tree, Always green, This is a symbol of peace, fertility. There are also trees, Even an aspen, associated with evil, unclean forces or mourning, underground world, like cypresses, death – Like a willow. Broniewski appears in various roles, contexts. For example, it can be a tree of war (Like in a Polish soldier), nostalgia (Like in a despairing tree), finally sadness – Like in the birch we analyzed. Let us note, that in other writers, birch often draws attention to something else, np. symbolizes the beginning, spring, beautiful girl, The crying birch appears as a symbol of sadness – Like in poem T. Lenartowicz: Tangible birch, Sad trees.
Birch poem comes from the last period of Broniewski's work, from the volume Anka, which is a collection of poignant lyrics (poems–trenches, Epitafi poems) dedicated to the tragically deceased, beloved daughter of the poet. In the lyrical situation outlined in the poem, the father's memory of the deceased child is still very fresh, Time did not heal this deep wound. Regret, despair is very violent feelings, which there is no way to escape:
Against sorrows, what will I do,
o! birch!
Usnę, I will wake up,
Something will be in me,
to remember, remember,
o! birch!
A casket poisoned song remains in the heart of the poet, She imposes such a picture of the world to him and not another, orders to see all reality through the prism of tragic experience, pain. This is a poem not so much talking about a daughter, what poet-oh, his situations and feelings, consequences of the death of a loved one for the writing of the lyrical subject identical to the author. It's just a poet's monologue – daughter, and even more so the tree, remains silent in the song.
In this autothematic lyrical monologue (As we mentioned, The tree becomes a silent listener) writer, The main element is the fear of it, Will the words be able to reflect the pain of the suffering subject, can they be an equivalent of the feelings of the unhappy father:
How despair to express, When I live,
o! birch!
When the words are bland, nobody,
and I will say despair
words, that they mean nothing,
o! birch!
The death of her daughter became for her father with anything incomparable experience, tragedy. She prompted to verify previous ideas -all about poetry, words, Because that father was a poet.
