Volkswagen – Car identification

Typ, type of engine, identification numbers and other data that uniquely identifies the car, are in Golf in different places. The car's nameplate is located in the engine compartment on the socket of the left suspension strut mount. The bonnet is opened by unlocking the lever located on the left side under the dashboard, and then by pulling the pull rod under the cover in the direction indicated by the arrow. The plate includes:

■ vehicle identification number (VIN),

■ permissible total weight,

■ permissible set weight (with a trailer),

■ permitted front axle load,

■ permitted rear axle load,

■ type of vehicle.

Vehicle identification number shown on the plate (VIN) it is also located on the body (in the engine compartment under the windshield). Regardless of this, the nameplate is located in the recess for the spare cat (on the left side). It contains all the important information to identify the car: model, type of engine and gearbox, paint number and car accessories. The same information is printed on the first page of the warranty book. The car identification number is structured as follows:

* WVWZZZ1JZYB104329*

Individual letters and numbers stand for:

WVW – manufacturer's designation, VW AG, passenger cars intended for the European market,

ZZ7 – constant characters (filling),

1J – at the model (in this case, Golf IV and Bora),

Z – permanent sign (filling),

Y – model of the year (counted from August of the previous year of production to July of a given year of production; tu: 2000),

B – factory of the VW concern (in this case, Brussels),

104329 – the car's serial number within the given model year, starting with 000001

The engine number is located on the engine block near the gearbox and on the toothed belt cover. The gearbox has its own separate number. It is imperative to quote all these numbers when ordering spare parts, because the fourth generation Golf has many separate parts, although they sometimes visually resemble parts from previous models or from other VW cars.
