STARTER – Fiat Uno

STARTER

In Fiat Uno cars, a traditional starter with an electromagnetic switch and a one-way clutch is used. Starters manufactured by Marelli and Femsa are installed, which are structurally similar to each other.

Checking the starter

The type of symptoms of poor starter operation indicates possible causes of the failure. Some of the most common examples are given below.

■ If the starter does not activate, should be checked, the battery is not discharged, whether its terminals are not corroded or the wiring at the starter is loose. In addition, the carbon brushes may be worn, ovalized commutator or short circuit in the winding.

■ If the starter rotates at high speed and does not crank the crankshaft, damage to the pinion or the backstop can be expected.

■ If the starter turns very slowly, either they are worn out brushes, or there is a short circuit in the winding. Check the connections between the battery and the starter before removing the starter.

■ If the starter does not turn or runs the engine very slowly (the pinion meshes with the flywheel), then turn on the headlamps and repeat the actuation. When the lights dim, and the crankshaft does not turn, the pinion may be jammed on the flywheel. If the lights don't dim, check the connection of the battery terminals.
Starter replacement

Replacing the starter is a simple operation and does not require a detailed description.

■ Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

■ Disconnect the wires at the starter.

■ Remove the screws securing the starter to the clutch housing. Remove the starter.

The starter is installed in the reverse order.
