Checking and replacing the alternator – Fiat Uno

ALTERNATOR

Fiat Uno cars are equipped with Marelli or Femsa alternators. Observe the following guidelines when operating the alternator.

■ The alternator must not be disconnected from the battery while the engine is running.

■ The alternator connection cables must not be interchanged.

■ When charging a battery left in the vehicle with the charger, disconnect the terminals from the terminals.

Checking the alternator

■ Connect the ammeter and voltmeter according to the diagram in the figure.

■ Set the engine speed to 3000…4000 rpm.

■ Switch on all electrical consumers. The voltage should not go below 13,5 V, and the output current must not be lower than the value indicated on the alternator by more than 4 A. If the above conditions are not met, the alternator must be replaced.

The voltage regulator is located inside the alternator or screwed to its housing. It is an electronic regulator, which is not repairable. At a temperature of 20 ° C, the nominal voltage is kept by the regulator in the range of 14.0…14,3 V.

Replacing the alternator

■ Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.

■ Disconnect all cables from the alternator.

■ Remove the nuts on the bracket and on the lower alternator mounting. Hold the alternator, remove the V-belt and take out the bolts.

■ Remove the alternator.

Installation takes place in the reverse order.

■ First lightly screw on the lower alternator mounting.

■ Adjust belt tension in this way, that it can be bent under the pressure of a finger by 10…15 mm (Engines 900,1100.1300) the 5…10 mm (Engines 1300 D. 1700 D, 1300 Turbo). Only then should the fastening screws be tightened. Use the recommended tightening torques.

■ A cracked or slipped belt on the sides must be replaced.
